There are 8 levels of Mentoring recognised by The Mentoring School. Written by Richard Daniel Curtis in 2018, these levels help to establish the type of mentor required for situations, but also help mentors to understand the level they are working at and their developmental opportunities.
These are:
First LevelAwareness | A mentor at this level has a basic awareness of what mentoring is and relies on their own people skills. They may have done a short awareness course, for example an online course. Mentors at this level may be involved in offering informal mentoring to others or subordinates. |
Second LevelPrinciples | Someone who uses their experience and people to skills to formally mentor someone. They will have had some form of training, such as a one-day introductory course. |
Third LevelPractitioner | A Mentor who has taken a recognised Course and been assessed as meeting the level of knowledge and reflection required, such as a formal qualification. |
Fourth LevelAdvanced Practitioner | This is a Mentor who has enhanced their Third Level Qualification with further learning and have a deeper understanding of the theory and evidence base for Mentoring. |
Fifth LevelAcademic | This is a Mentor who has used their learning about Mentoring to produce academic papers or published evidence-based guides. They may train lower level Mentors. |
Sixth LevelResearch | A Mentor at this level will work with The Mentoring School community to undertake field based research in best practice mentoring. |
Seventh LevelMastery | Seventh Level Mentors are masters of Mentoring, they have spent thousands of hours studying the subject and are seen as experts within The Mentoring School community. They would be involved in writing lower Level qualifications. |
Eighth LevelGame Changer | An Eighth Level Mentor uses their skills to help others to set up mentoring programmes or train trainers to deliver Mentor Qualifications. They are involved in work with global organisations, like the Mentoring School, to impact Mentoring practice around the world. |
