A Quick Introduction to the Course:

Sport England reported that sports and physical activity generates £100 billion in social value, meaning that providing the right support to help keep participants and athletes engaged is more important than ever.
What is the difference between a sports coach and a sports mentor?
A sports coach primarily focuses on improving technical skills, physical performance, and tactical execution. A sports mentor, however, focuses on the “whole athlete.” Our Level 3 course is developed from a mental health led framework and trains you to support an athlete’s mental wellbeing. Help them overcome psychological barriers like the fear of failure, and guide their long-term personal and professional development off the field.
These skills are vital for bridging the gap between physical training and psychological performance by using evidence-based motivational support for elite and grassroots athletes. Expand your skillset and gain an accredited qualification that enables you to combine your existing knowledge of tactics and physical performance with true support for the person behind the player.

How does this qualification support athlete mental health?
We use a mental health led framework that equips mentors to identify early signs of stress, burnout, or anxiety in their players. By creating a safe, nurturing environment, mentors help athletes build the psychological resilience needed to handle the pressures of competitive sport while maintaining a healthy life balance.
Is this course suitable for grassroots volunteers?
Absolutely. While the qualification is professional-standard, it is designed to be accessible for anyone in a leadership role within a sports club. For grassroots organizations, having a certified mentor can be a “game-changer” for player retention and building a positive community culture.
Can mentoring help with player retention in sports clubs?
Yes. Sport England data shows that social value and engagement are key to keeping people in sport. Mentoring addresses the barriers to engagement that physical coaching often misses, making players feel more supported, valued, and likely to stay committed to their team and their personal goals.
