Who is this course for?

The Children’s Mentor Qualification is designed for teachers, teaching assistants, learning mentors and other pastoral staff in primary education and alternative provision settings. It is especially popular with those who are looking to address the root causes of challenging behaviour in Key Stage 1 and 2, using evidence based tools for primary school pastoral interventions.

Training in SEMH Interventions

The Children’s Mentor Qualification is a level 3 course specifically created for staff working in primary school settings. It focuses on practical skills for delivering SEMH interventions, addressing behavioural issues, SEND provision and mental health challenges faced by pupils.

Supporting SEND and AP Pupils through Mentoring

Designed from a mental health led framework, the Children’s Mentor course covers skills on overcoming barriers, adapting learning approaches, and effective tools for interventions along with wider group involvement. It includes practical methods of how to assess, plan and deliver interventions for social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Children’s Mentors are enabled to understand the root causes of social, emotional and behavioural challenges, and best practice for addressing them.

Mapping to the SEND Code of Practice: Learning Outcomes for SENCos

Our Children’s Mentor Qualification is designed to support the ‘Assess, Plan, Do, Review’ cycle outlined in the SEND Code of Practice. It empowers your pastoral and support staff to deliver high-quality, graduated responses to pupil needs.

1. Enhanced Assessment of SEMH Needs

Learners move beyond observing ‘challenging behaviour’ to identifying the underlying social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) triggers. This leads to more accurate identification of needs as required by the Code.

2. Evidence-Based Intervention Planning

Staff gain the tools to create structured, documented intervention plans. This ensures that the Plan and Do stages of the graduated approach are robust, targeted, and measurable.

3. Adaptive Teaching & Learning Approaches

The course provides practical methods for adapting mentoring techniques for pupils with diverse SEND profiles, ensuring that interventions remain inclusive and accessible to children with varying communication and cognitive needs.

4. Supporting the Review Cycle with Robust Documentation

Learners are taught how to track and document pupil progress effectively. This provides SENCos with the high-quality evidence needed for Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) applications and annual reviews.

5. Reducing Barriers to Engagement

By focusing on a mental health led framework, mentors help pupils develop the emotional resilience and self-regulation skills necessary to re-engage with classroom learning, directly supporting the school’s inclusive ethos.

How does this qualification help with SEMH in primary schools?

Our course uses a mental health led framework to help staff understand the root causes of social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) difficulties. Learners gain practical tools to assess, plan, and deliver interventions that move beyond surface-level behaviour and address the underlying needs of the child.

Is this course suitable for Teaching Assistants (TAs)?

Absolutely. Many of our learners are TAs or Learning Mentors who are responsible for delivering 1:1 or small group interventions. The Level 3 qualification provides the professional theory and accredited status to back up the vital physical work they do with children every day.

Can we use this training for our SEND and Alternative Provision (AP) pupils?

Yes. The curriculum is specifically designed to address the challenges faced in primary and AP settings. It covers adapting learning approaches and overcoming barriers to engagement, making it ideal for staff supporting pupils with complex SEND requirements or those in non-traditional educational environments.

How does the 15-minute unit structure benefit school staff?

We know that school days are incredibly busy. Our micro-learning approach allows staff to fit their professional development into gaps in their schedule- such as PPA time or after school- without needing to take full days away from the classroom.

“This will help the children I work with hugely as I will be able to identify, document and plan better. It has also given me more professional information to help back up the great physical work that we do.”
