Advanced Children and Young Person Mentoring

This level 4 course is designed for teachers, learning mentors and pastoral staff in primary, secondary or further education and alternative provision settings. With The Children’s Society reporting that in the past three years, the likelihood of young people having a mental health problem has increased by 50%, being able to provide effective support is more important than ever.

Please note: for the Advanced Children and Young Person Mentoring course, participants are required to have previously completed a Level 3 (Practitioner) qualification.

Core Modules

Foundations of Mentoring

This module covers the theories which underpin mentoring relationships, including: stages of mentoring relationships, functions of mentoring, and successful pairings

The Mentoring Approach

This module examines the different choices mentors make in their support, including: types of mentoring and coaching approaches, purposes of relationships, developmental (planned) activities, and clear (unplanned) activities

Reflective Practice

This module explores effective reflection of your mentoring practice as well as the self-development opportunities provided by supporting others, including: mentoring dispositions, emotions, developing others, and self-development

Researching a Mentoring Topic

We support you to research a topic of your choice based on your mentoring practice to date, including: undertaking research, applying research outcomes, and impact of this research

Application Module

This module expands on the Core Modules to embed your learning within your advanced children and young person mentoring. You will explore additional factors which can impact mentoring and consider how they can influence your own practice.

This includes:

  • Internal and external barriers
  • Resources
  • Services
  • The role of the mentee
  • The role of others
  • Making progress towards identified goals

Assessment

Submission of a portfolio developed over the duration of the course. Sections are completed on a module-by-module basis, then submitted as a full portfolio upon completion of the Advanced Children and Young Person Mentoring course.
